How older adults can stay safe, avoid injury and maintain independence
Reducing the chance of falls in the home is one of the best things seniors can do to avoid serious injuries, hospital visits and the need for long-term rehab.
Our rehab team at PACE Southeast Michigan offers physical and occupational therapy designed to build strength, increase confidence and support independence. One of our Physical Therapy Assistants, Tracey Steeves, shared her tips for preventing falls at home.
Maintain balance by using the right tools
If you’ve been prescribed an assistive device like a walker, cane, hearing aids or glasses, it’s important to use it. These devices support your ability to move around your environment safely.
Close-heeled, supportive shoes with good tread can also support balance. Other practices, like wearing a lifeline or keeping a cellphone in your pocket, ensure help is accessible in the event of a fall.
Lower the risk of falling by slowing down
As we age, moving slower around our homes can also help prevent accidents that could lead to injury.
“Lots of us are busy people, and it’s easy to find ourselves hurrying from place to place,” Steeves said. “But, taking a moment to slow down when walking or making sure your wheelchair brakes are locked before you stand up can be a significant tool for preventing a fall. When we rush, we might become unsteady.”
Prevent accidents by maintaining a clean home
Keeping your floors clear of clutter and pet hair reduces the risk of tripping and falling.
Steeves also recommends people with small pets at home look out for them when moving around and people with oxygen tanks make sure the chords are safely tucked away.
Create an environment that promotes safety
Steeves recommends seniors avoid having to reach for high objects.

“Put things within reach based on your physical ability,” she said. “Have someone lower objects that are high in your cupboards and closets so you don’t reach overhead or have to use a step ladder, which can increase your chance of a fall.”
Our rehab team at PACE Southeast Michigan conducts home visits to make recommendations or identify needed equipment like grab bars. For PACE Southeast Michigan participants, durable medical equipment is covered at no out of pocket cost.
Take advantage of your PACE Southeast Michigan gym
PACE Southeast Michigan participants have access to the expert team and exercise equipment in our rehab gyms. Participants can use these facilities to work toward a physical goal under the supervision of our team or just exercise.
“As long as you are a PACE participant, you are invited to attend rehab sessions to work on your strength, mobility and activities of daily living,” Steeves said. “The stronger our participants are, the less risk of falls they have. This can lead to a happier, healthier and independent lifestyle, which is what we’re all about here at PACE Southeast Michigan.”
